The Castro District 🏳️
The Castro is the world's most famous gay neighborhood — a 50-year-old community that became the cradle of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. In the 1970s, gay men and women moved here in waves from across America, transforming a working-class Irish neighborhood into the most visible queer enclave on earth.
History & Legacy
Harvey Milk — America's first openly gay elected official — opened his camera shop at 575 Castro St and won a seat on the SF Board of Supervisors in 1977. His assassination in 1978 galvanized the movement. Gilbert Baker designed the original Rainbow Flag here in 1978, now a universal symbol of LGBTQ+ pride. The Castro was ground zero for ACT UP and community organizing during the AIDS crisis, and remains a living memorial to those lost.
